Lesson Overview
1.1 – Defining Culture and Its Role in Daily Communication: Culture is the invisible system that shapes how people speak, listen, and behave. It influences what is seen as polite, how emotions are shown, and which topics are open or private. Every conversation carries cultural signals, whether through tone, timing, or word choice. Understanding culture helps you avoid missteps and connect more thoughtfully with others. It teaches you to listen for meaning beyond words, noticing gestures, pauses, and expressions. When you realize your habits are just one version of “normal,” you become more open to others’ ways of thinking. Culture provides shared values that keep communities stable but can also create blind spots if unexamined. Building awareness of your own background gives you perspective on how it affects your assumptions. True communication starts when curiosity replaces judgment, allowing dialogue to bridge those unseen divides that culture quietly builds.
