Lesson Overview

6.1 – What Counts as Substance Use or Misuse: Substance use includes any consumption of alcohol, tobacco, prescription medication, or drugs that affect mood, awareness, or behavior. Psychoeducation helps clarify the line between use, misuse, and dependence by focusing on intent, frequency, and consequence. Occasional use for medical or social reasons can shift into misuse when it begins to control your routines, emotions, or relationships. Misuse doesn’t always start with reckless behavior; sometimes it grows from stress, curiosity, or coping attempts. Understanding the spectrum of use helps remove stigma and replace judgment with awareness. When you learn to identify early warning signs—such as needing more of a substance to feel normal or using to escape emotions—you gain the power to act before harm escalates. Recognizing the difference between healthy management and dependency lays the groundwork for prevention, reflection, and long-term emotional stability.
