Lesson Overview

3.4 – Understanding Main Ideas vs. Details in Texts: Identify the main idea as the “point,” and details as “proof.” Look at the first and last sentences of each paragraph for clues. Use highlighting to mark only one sentence per paragraph as the core idea. Write the main idea in your own words to test understanding. Ask what the author wants the reader to believe or learn. Compare supporting facts to see which directly connect. Avoid over-highlighting by limiting yourself to key evidence. Practice finding main ideas in news summaries or short essays. Check comprehension by explaining the passage without looking. Strengthen this skill through daily reading reflections.
