Lesson Overview

7.3 – Exploring Implicit vs. Explicit Bias: Bias operates on two levels—explicit, which we can name, and implicit, which hides beneath awareness. Explicit bias shows in open preference or prejudice, while implicit bias leaks through tone, body language, or microdecisions. Both influence how people interpret and respond to others. Understanding this difference helps dismantle bias without shame. Implicit bias training reveals automatic associations shaped by exposure and repetition. Naming bias weakens its power, allowing deliberate correction. Awareness encourages accountability instead of guilt. Communication becomes inclusive when reflection precedes reaction. Differentiating these layers teaches emotional intelligence—the ability to balance instinct with empathy. By examining bias honestly, people learn to speak and listen with clarity that honors equality and understanding.
