Lesson Overview

7.3 – The Substitution Method of Habit Change: The substitution method replaces an old habit with a new one that gives a similar reward. Instead of removing the action completely, you redirect the energy behind it. For example, if stress makes you snack, try breathing or walking for a few minutes instead. The cue stays the same, but the routine changes. This gentle approach keeps your brain comfortable while still rewiring it. Substitution works best when the new action is easy and satisfying. Over time, your brain starts to prefer the healthier option. Change doesn’t mean stopping—it means swapping for something better.
