🛡️ Teen Survival Guide for Police Encounters
Course overview
Lesson Overview

1.6 – What NOT to Say During a Stop (Even If You’re Innocent): Words can either calm or ignite a situation. Avoid sarcasm, anger, or sudden defensiveness. Never say things like “I know my rights” in a challenging tone or “You can’t do that.” Instead, use short, steady responses such as “Yes officer” or “I choose to remain silent.” You don’t have to explain where you’re going, why you’re out, or what you’ve done. Anything you say can be misinterpreted or used later. Let your calm speak for you. Silence is not guilt; it’s protection. The goal is to de-escalate with every word you don’t say. Speak only when it helps keep you safe or clarifies instructions.
