🛡️ Teen Survival Guide for Police Encounters
Course overview
Lesson Overview

1.22 – Do You Have to Talk at All? (No.): You always have the right to remain silent. That right protects you even if you’re innocent. You must, however, provide basic identification if legally required in your state. Beyond that, you don’t need to explain, defend, or argue. Silence cannot be punished, though pressure may make it feel like it can. Use phrases like “I choose to remain silent” instead of saying nothing completely. Calm silence builds safety and self-respect. Your words can wait for a lawyer, but your life cannot. The smartest thing you can say is often nothing at all.
