Lesson Overview

1.4 – Understanding Culture Shock in Reentry: Reentry can feel like stepping into a world you thought you knew but now see through new eyes, creating a sense of emotional disconnection called reverse culture shock. Familiar spaces may suddenly seem strange, and people who once felt close might feel distant because you’ve changed while they stayed the same. Expectations that life will simply return to normal often clash with the reality that you’ve grown in ways others may not recognize. This tension can cause frustration, confusion, and even guilt about feeling out of place in your own environment. Culture shock in reentry teaches that growth always changes your perspective, and adaptation takes time. The discomfort of not fitting in is actually proof that transformation occurred while you were away. Understanding that this stage is temporary helps reduce self-doubt and keeps you open to rediscovering connection in new ways. You learn to blend who you were with who you’ve become, creating a more authentic version of yourself. With patience and reflection, the world starts to feel familiar again, not because it changed, but because you learned how to see it differently.
