Lesson Overview

4.2 – Practicing Mindfulness to Stay Present: Mindfulness is the discipline of noticing the present moment without judgment. When mental health symptoms mix with addiction challenges, the mind often drifts into guilt about the past or anxiety about the future. Staying present interrupts that spiral. Through mindful breathing, body scans, or simple sensory focus, individuals create a calm gap between emotion and reaction. That pause allows for conscious choices instead of impulsive habits. Mindfulness also teaches emotional observation—seeing thoughts as waves that rise and fall rather than storms to fight. Practiced regularly, it becomes an anchor for emotional regulation and relapse prevention.
