Lesson Overview

4.6 – Building Tolerance for Emotional Discomfort: Emotional discomfort is an inevitable part of healing. Many relapse triggers come from the desire to escape uncomfortable feelings quickly. Building tolerance means learning to stay with those feelings without judgment or avoidance. This skill transforms pain into information—each emotion becomes a signal, not an emergency. Through repeated practice, discomfort loses its control. Individuals begin to recognize that emotions rise, peak, and fade naturally. Tolerating distress strengthens emotional endurance, reduces impulsive reactions, and reinforces long-term recovery. It is a hallmark of emotional maturity and growth.
