9.2 – Recognizing a Medical Emergency: Recognizing an emergency quickly can save a life. Trouble breathing, severe bleeding, sudden chest pain, fainting, seizures, allergic reactions, or confusion that starts out of nowhere are urgent signals. If someone stops responding, you must assume they need immediate help. Checking the environment ensures it is safe before approaching. Speaking calmly to the person, asking their name, and looking for signs like pale skin, dizziness, or slurred speech helps you identify the problem faster. If something feels seriously wrong, you never wait for permission to act — calling emergency services right away gives trained responders time to reach you. Staying with the person makes them feel less afraid while you monitor their breathing and comfort them. Knowing when symptoms cross the line into emergency status builds trust in your instincts. Quick response saves lives and shows that you value human safety above hesitation or fear.
