9.5 – De-Escalation in Emotional Crises: Emotional crises can be just as dangerous as physical emergencies. Someone overwhelmed by panic, anger, or fear may struggle to control their actions. De-escalation begins with staying calm and using a gentle tone that shows safety, not judgment. Giving space prevents the person from feeling trapped, while listening without interrupting helps them release emotional pressure. Encouraging slow breathing and grounding techniques allows the nervous system to settle. Avoid arguing or demanding explanations — crisis emotions often speak louder than logic. If threats of harm appear, call trained help immediately. Showing empathy reminds the person they are not alone and helps them feel understood. De-escalation protects everyone involved and turns chaos into a pathway back toward control.
