Lesson Overview

9.9 – Handling Panic Attacks in Public: Panic attacks can feel terrifying, especially in busy places. Staying calm and helping the person focus on slow breathing reduces intensity. Assuring them they are safe and the feelings will pass brings comfort. Guiding them to a quieter spot if possible protects their privacy and reduces stimulation. Grounding techniques — such as naming five things they see or touching something with texture — reconnect them with the present moment. Avoid telling them to “calm down,” because emotions are already out of control. Remaining patient gives the nervous system time to reset. Supporting someone through panic shows empathy and builds confidence for the next time symptoms appear.
