Lesson Overview

1.11 – Balancing Individual Identity and Family Identity: Make two lists: “Who I am” and “Who we are.” Include values, hobbies, traditions, and dreams. Notice where they support each other and where they collide. Schedule protected time for personal goals and protected time for family rituals. Use a shared calendar so trade-offs feel fair. When a conflict appears, state the value behind each choice, then design a both/and plan. Teach kids to advocate for their interests while respecting group needs. Rotate whose priority leads on weekends. Celebrate uniqueness at family check-ins by inviting each person to share a highlight. Keep identity statements short and posted somewhere visible. Review them seasonally and adjust with life changes. Healthy families make room for “me” without losing “we.”
