9.5 – Offering and Receiving Genuine Apologies: A real apology combines empathy, responsibility, and a plan for change; describe clearly what you’re apologizing for and why it mattered, such as “I know I hurt you when I stopped listening to your needs”; avoid the word “but” because it erases the apology and shifts blame; allow time for the apology to sink in—healing rarely happens instantly; be prepared for the other person to need space or to ask questions about how things will be different; when receiving an apology, acknowledge the courage it took to give it; forgiveness doesn’t mean forgetting, it means giving the relationship a chance to heal; sincere apologies rebuild the bridge one respectful plank at a time.
