Lesson Overview

1.24 – Grooming: What It Looks Like and Why It’s Abuse: Grooming happens when an adult slowly builds trust with a younger person to take advantage of them later. It often starts with compliments, gifts, or attention that seems friendly, but it hides a harmful plan. The adult may try to make the young person feel special, then push boundaries little by little. They might say things like “don’t tell anyone” or make the teen feel guilty for wanting space. This behavior is manipulation, not love or friendship. Grooming is illegal because it tricks young people into unhealthy and unsafe situations. Recognizing the signs — secrecy, pressure, or isolation — can protect you and others from harm. Real trust doesn’t require secrets or fear. Speaking up about grooming is brave and can stop abuse before it gets worse. Awareness is the first step to staying safe and strong.
