Lesson Overview

1.71 – Court-Ordered DNA Testing: Court-ordered DNA testing can confirm who the biological parent of a child is. This process protects both the survivor and the child’s rights. When questions of paternity arise, a judge may order testing to remove any doubt. The test is quick, noninvasive, and usually involves a cheek swab. Results are handled carefully to ensure they are accurate and legal. Once confirmed, the court can decide child support, custody, or protection issues. If the pregnancy resulted from assault, DNA proof can support criminal charges. Survivors can request testing even without a lawyer, though legal aid can help. If the other party refuses testing, courts may interpret that refusal as guilt. It’s important to keep all documents and court notices organized and safe. Judges usually issue protective orders to prevent further contact during testing. Results are confidential and shared only with the court and the parties involved. Knowing the results can bring both closure and safety for the survivor. It also ensures accountability from the person responsible. Taking this step helps ensure fairness, justice, and protection for your future and your child’s future.
