1.2 – How the Body Reacts to Stress: Fight, Flight, or Freeze: When stress hits, your brain activates a survival system that has helped humans stay safe for thousands of years. Your body sends out fast signals through hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which prepare you to fight back, run away, or pause to stay unnoticed. You might feel your heart pounding as more blood moves to your muscles to react quickly. Your breathing may speed up while your body tries to get more oxygen for quick movement. Some people feel shaky or sweaty as nerves wake up to stay alert. The freeze response can make your mind go blank or your body feel stuck when decisions feel overwhelming. These reactions are normal, even if they show up at times when there is no real danger. Once the moment passes, your body should return to balance, but ongoing stress can make that recovery slower. Understanding this system helps you create tools that tell your body it is safe again.
