2.3 – Interpreting Behavior as Communication: Behavior always tells you something. Meltdowns can mean “I’m overwhelmed.” Silence can mean “I’m unsure or scared.” Defiance can mean “I need control.” Clowning can mean “I want attention.” Look for the need under the action. Ask gentle questions to learn more. Change the environment to help success. Teach a safer way to get the need met. When needs are heard, behavior improves.
