7.1 – What Is Civic Engagement and Why It Matters: Civic engagement means taking part in activities that help your community and ensure everyone’s voice is heard. It can include voting, volunteering, attending meetings, or speaking up about important issues. When people get involved, the community becomes stronger and more supportive for everyone. Engagement helps you learn how decisions are made and how change happens. It gives you power to influence what services and opportunities exist around you. Participating builds confidence and leadership skills. It also shows that you care about fairness and the well-being of others. Civic engagement protects your rights and the rights of others. When more people participate, the community becomes safer, healthier, and more inclusive. Being engaged allows you to help shape a better future.
