Lesson Overview

4.3 – Local, State, and Federal Government Basics: The U.S. government functions through three levels that coordinate power. Local governments manage schools, zoning, and local law enforcement. State governments handle education systems, health regulations, and infrastructure. The federal government oversees defense, currency, and national policy. Each level has executive, legislative, and judicial branches for checks and balance. Citizens can influence all three through petitions, elections, and advocacy. Understanding which level controls an issue saves time and effort. Read city and state websites to see where decisions originate. Attend local meetings to witness democracy at work. Knowledge of structure is the first step toward effective change.
