🛡️ Teen Survival Guide for Police Encounters
Course overview
Lesson Overview

2.23 – Can You Be Held Without Charges? For How Long?: Police can hold you for a limited time before charging you with a crime, but they cannot keep you forever without reason. In most states, the maximum is 48 to 72 hours, though some cases move faster. During that time, they may question you, collect evidence, or contact a prosecutor. You still have the right to stay silent and ask for a lawyer. If you aren’t charged, you must be released. Never sign anything without reading or understanding it. Jail can feel intimidating, but remember that silence and patience protect you. Once a lawyer is involved, the process becomes clearer and faster. Don’t lose hope — time and truth are on your side when you use your rights wisely.
