🛡️ Teen Survival Guide for Police Encounters
Course overview
Lesson Overview

2.4 – Can They Search You or Your Stuff? – What’s Legal: Police need a reason before they search you or your belongings. That reason is called “probable cause.” Without it, they usually need your permission or a warrant. They can pat you down for weapons if they believe you might be armed. But digging through bags, phones, or pockets is different. If they ask to search, you have the right to say, “I do not consent to a search.” Saying that does not mean you are hiding something – it just protects your privacy. Remember, anything they find could be used in court. Knowing what’s legal helps you stay confident and safe. Your body and property belong to you, and your rights exist to defend them.
