🛡️ Teen Survival Guide for Police Encounters

Lesson Overview

4.15 – Understanding Bail, Bond, and Release Conditions: When someone is arrested, bail and bond decide whether they wait for court inside or outside. Bail is the money set to ensure you return to court. If paid, you go home until your hearing. Bond is when someone else—a bondsman or family—pays on your behalf. If you skip court, the money is lost and a warrant follows. Judges set bail based on risk, behavior, and seriousness of the charge. Some teens are released “on recognizance,” meaning they promise to show up without paying. Release conditions may include curfews, travel limits, or no-contact orders. Breaking those rules brings you back before the judge fast. Always read paperwork carefully and keep copies of every order. Don’t assume freedom means the case is over—it’s only paused. Treat every check-in or rule seriously, because compliance builds trust. Following through shows the system you’re responsible and worth another chance. The less drama you create, the more freedom you keep.
