11.28 – Understanding “Title Jumping” and Why It’s Illegal: Title jumping occurs when someone sells a car without officially transferring the title into their name first, and it’s a serious violation that jeopardizes both buyers and the integrity of state records. The seller avoids paying taxes or registration fees by skipping proper ownership steps, but legally the vehicle still belongs to the previous titled owner. Buyers who purchase from such sellers cannot register or insure the car until the missing transfers are corrected. Penalties for title jumping include fines, license suspension, and possible criminal charges for fraud. To avoid becoming a victim, always verify that the seller’s name on the title matches their ID and that all signatures are completed before money exchanges hands. Never agree to delay title transfer for “tax reasons” or convenience. Report suspicious activity to the DMV immediately. Title jumping distorts accountability in ownership, creates liability risks, and undermines the trust that keeps transactions legitimate. Recognizing and avoiding it safeguards both your finances and your legal standing as a responsible vehicle owner.
