11.5 – What Happens If the Seller Doesn’t Transfer the Title Properly: Title transfer is the legal bridge that moves ownership from seller to buyer, and if that bridge is broken, you risk losing both money and rights. When a seller fails to submit or sign the title correctly, the vehicle may remain legally registered under their name, leaving you unable to register, insure, or resell it. The first step is to contact the seller immediately and request correction. If they refuse or disappear, contact your DMV to file for a bonded or replacement title, showing proof of payment and a bill of sale. A bond acts as insurance against potential ownership disputes, but it can take time and fees to complete. Avoid this situation by inspecting the title carefully before purchase—it should list no open liens and must be signed exactly as the printed name appears. Never drive a car without the title transfer finalized; accidents or tickets could still affect the previous owner, causing legal confusion for both sides. Retain every document showing payment, agreement, and attempts to resolve the issue. Understanding the title process keeps you legally grounded and prevents a small paperwork oversight from becoming a major financial burden.
