Lesson Overview

3.6 – Understanding How to Address a Judge: Addressing a judge properly shows that you respect the legal system and value fairness. Always refer to them as “Your Honor” when speaking. Stand up when you’re addressed, and wait until you’re invited to speak. Keep your responses short, clear, and honest. Avoid raising your voice or interrupting anyone, even if you disagree. Judges notice calmness, organization, and respect far more than emotion or argument. If you need time to find an answer or document, ask politely. Speaking respectfully helps the judge see you as cooperative and credible. How you behave can influence how your message is received, even before your words are considered. Practicing proper address shows awareness, confidence, and understanding of courtroom expectations.
