7.6 – Rights When Dealing With Identity Theft: Identity theft can destroy credit and peace of mind, but knowing your rights helps you recover faster. Federal law allows you to place fraud alerts and credit freezes to stop further damage. You have the right to dispute fraudulent charges and demand correction from credit bureaus and creditors. File a report with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and local police to create official records. Keep copies of all correspondence and use certified mail when possible. Identity theft victims also have the right to free copies of credit reports to monitor ongoing issues. Acting quickly and documenting everything limits long-term harm. Protecting your identity is not just financial—it’s emotional security. Awareness, speed, and persistence restore control after violation and rebuild trust in your personal information.
