6.8 – Recognizing Signs of Housing Discrimination: Housing discrimination occurs when someone is treated unfairly because of race, gender, religion, disability, family status, or other protected characteristics. Under the Fair Housing Act, landlords and property managers cannot refuse to rent, set different terms, or harass tenants for discriminatory reasons. Warning signs include being told a unit is unavailable when it’s not, higher fees for certain groups, or discouraging certain applicants. Keep detailed records of communications, including emails and ads. Report suspected violations to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or your local housing authority. Everyone deserves access to fair housing opportunities. Recognizing discrimination empowers you to challenge bias with confidence and helps create communities where fairness, dignity, and equality thrive.
