6.14 – Understanding Squatter Laws and Risks: Squatter laws, often called “adverse possession,” describe when someone occupies a property without permission and may gain limited rights over time. However, squatting is risky and rarely legal in the short term. Property owners can usually remove unauthorized occupants through legal eviction, not force. In some cases, long-term occupancy with payment of taxes and open possession may create a legal claim, but this takes years and strict conditions. Understanding these laws helps tenants and landlords prevent misunderstandings. Always verify ownership and lease agreements before moving into a property. For landlords, routine inspections and documentation prevent unlawful occupation. Awareness of squatter laws helps both sides avoid conflict and ensures property use remains lawful, fair, and transparent.
