Lesson Overview

7.1 – Understanding Your Rights With Creditors: Your rights with creditors exist to protect you from unfair treatment, harassment, or deception while managing debt. Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) and Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), creditors must communicate respectfully, provide accurate information, and avoid threats or false claims. You have the right to request written proof of any debt and to dispute charges you believe are incorrect. Creditors cannot call excessively, share your debt details with others, or demand payments you don’t owe. Knowing these protections helps you stay calm and assertive during financial stress. Always keep written records of calls, letters, or agreements. Knowledge of your rights allows you to communicate strategically, avoid intimidation, and take back control of your financial decisions. Awareness is your strongest defense against pressure and misinformation.
