7.2 – Fair Debt Collection Practices Explained: Fair debt collection laws exist to prevent abuse and ensure honesty in the repayment process. The FDCPA limits how and when collectors can contact you—they cannot call before 8 a.m. or after 9 p.m., threaten arrest, or use insulting language. You also have the right to request all communication in writing and stop phone calls by submitting a written notice. Collectors must identify themselves, disclose the creditor’s name, and verify any disputed amounts. Ignoring these rules can result in penalties against the collector. Understanding these laws turns confusion into control. If harassment occurs, document every incident and report it to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) or your state attorney general. Protecting your peace of mind means standing firm on your rights and refusing to be pressured into decisions made under fear.
