Lesson Overview

2.13 – Language Around Recovery: The words we use about mental health matter. Saying “a person living with schizophrenia” is kinder than “a schizophrenic.” Language can heal or harm depending on how it’s used. Recovery language focuses on hope, progress, and possibility. It avoids words that shame or define someone by illness. When you say “I’m working on my mental health” instead of “I’m broken,” you reclaim power. Supportive language builds motivation to keep going. Families, teachers, and providers can learn to model this speech. Every encouraging word adds light to the recovery path. Changing language changes how people heal.
