Lesson Overview

6.5 – Understanding Involuntary Treatment: Involuntary treatment happens when someone is hospitalized against their will because of serious safety risks. It’s used only when a person might harm themselves or others and needs immediate care. Laws differ by state, but the goal is always safety and recovery. Even in these cases, you still have rights—to be informed, to have legal representation, and to appeal decisions. Once stable, you can take part in planning your next steps. Involuntary care is temporary, not punishment. It’s meant to protect life until full choice can return. Knowing your rights helps reduce fear and build trust.
