Lesson Overview

2.7 – Substance Use and Mental Health: Sometimes people use alcohol or drugs to numb pain or calm stress. But substance use can quickly harm both physical and mental health. It may worsen anxiety, depression, or trauma symptoms. Some people develop substance use disorders that need professional help. The link between addiction and mental health is called “dual diagnosis.” Treatment works best when both issues are treated together. Recovery programs, therapy, and support groups build healthier coping methods. Reaching out for help takes courage, not shame. Every small step—like talking honestly or skipping one drink—is progress. Healing the mind helps heal the body, and vice versa.
