Lesson Overview

1.6 – Common Myths About Suicide: Many people believe myths about suicide that cause confusion and harm. One myth is that people who talk about suicide are just seeking attention—but most are actually seeking help. Another myth is that suicide happens without warning, when in fact, there are often signs if we pay attention. Some think only people with severe mental illness attempt suicide, but it can affect anyone during deep emotional pain. There’s also the false idea that asking about suicide might put the idea in someone’s head—research shows the opposite is true. Talking openly reduces shame and saves lives. Myths make people afraid to reach out, while truth creates safety and connection. By challenging these misunderstandings, we make it easier for people to find help. The more we replace fear with knowledge, the more lives we can protect.
