1.65 – When to Involve a School Counselor: A school counselor is a safe adult who’s trained to deal with crises like this. If your friend has mentioned suicide, self-harm, or seems to be withdrawing, it’s time to speak up. You don’t have to know all the details before reaching out—just your concern is enough. A counselor can bring in resources, connect your friend to professional care, and make sure safety steps are in place. Sometimes your friend might resist or say they don’t want help, but you can remind them that the counselor’s job is to protect students. Talking to a counselor doesn’t mean your friend will get punished—it means they’ll get help. It’s an act of real care and responsibility. By involving a counselor, you’re not overreacting—you’re doing what a true friend does when someone’s life might be at risk.
