🛡️ Teen Suicide Series

Lesson Overview

1.62 – What to Say (And What Not to Say): The words you choose can make a huge difference when supporting a friend in emotional pain. Start with kindness and avoid saying things that dismiss their feelings, like “You’ll get over it” or “Others have it worse.” Instead, use phrases that show empathy, such as “I’m really sorry you’re hurting” or “I’m here for you.” Stay calm and listen more than you talk, giving them space to share. Avoid trying to fix their problems right away—your role is to listen and care. Reassure them that feelings can change and that help works. Speak slowly, without panic, and let your tone show understanding. Even small words of hope can be powerful. Remind them that what they’re feeling now doesn’t define their future. Most importantly, make sure they know they’re not a burden and you’re glad they trusted you.
