11.4 Understanding Ritual Behavior Cycles: Rituals feel like solutions, but they are actually the problem because every time you perform one, OCD gains more influence over your life. You learn that fear spikes, a ritual reduces the fear briefly, and your brain assumes the ritual prevented danger. Next time, OCD demands even more control to keep you “safe.” This creates a loop that grows stronger with repetition. The cycle can involve physical actions like washing or checking, mental rituals like repeating phrases, or avoidance like staying away from places that trigger worry. Understanding the cycle gives you a way to break it—by letting fear rise and fall naturally without responding with ritual. The less you obey the ritual urge, the weaker the cycle becomes.
