11.5 The Fear-Relief Loop Explained: OCD often traps you in a fear-relief loop: a scary thought appears, anxiety spikes, you perform a ritual, and relief arrives—but only for a short time. Your brain gets tricked into thinking the ritual caused safety, so it demands rituals again whenever fear reappears. The more relief you get from ritual, the more rituals you need. You learn that the true problem is not the fear itself—it’s the belief that you must obey the fear to feel okay. When you allow fear to exist without chasing relief, anxiety eventually falls on its own. That is how long-term confidence grows. The goal becomes tolerating discomfort until your brain learns the truth: you were always safe, even without the ritual.
