15.2 Understanding the Body’s Alarm System: Your body has a built-in alarm system designed to protect you from danger, but with panic disorder, that system becomes overly sensitive and goes off even when you are safe. You learn that racing heartbeat, sweating, trembling, and tunnel vision are the body’s way of preparing for escape or defense, not signs that catastrophe is coming. When you interpret these signals as danger, panic intensifies. But when you understand them as false alarms, you reclaim power. You begin responding to the alarm with patience instead of fear — slowing your breath, grounding your senses, and reminding yourself that your body is reacting to stress, not reality. Recognizing the alarm system’s purpose allows you to manage reactions with strength instead of panic.
