Lesson Overview

14.7 Practicing Eye Contact and Presence: Practicing eye contact and presence helps create a natural flow in communication and reassures both you and the other person that the interaction is respectful and real. You learn that eye contact doesn’t need to be constant or intense—it can be brief, gentle, and paired with natural breaks like looking to the side or glancing at something relevant in the environment. You also practice staying mentally present by listening for meaning instead of worrying how you appear. When anxious thoughts try to interrupt, you bring your focus back to the person’s words, their tone, and the shared moment, reminding yourself that connection matters more than performance. Presence builds trust and comfort in social settings, helping conversations feel less like tests and more like opportunities to understand and be understood. As you strengthen presence, you feel more confident expressing yourself and more relaxed receiving attention, realizing you belong in conversations just as much as anyone else.
