17.4 Challenging Negative Thinking: Negative thinking can become the loudest voice in depression, convincing you that your efforts don’t matter, your progress isn’t real, and your future has no hope. You learn to identify when these thoughts are distorted by depression rather than grounded in truth. You practice challenging them with realistic and compassionate statements that support your worth: “I am doing my best,” “This feeling is temporary,” and “I deserve care and respect.” You replace habits of self-criticism with habits of self-encouragement that remind you of your strengths. With time and repeated practice, positive and balanced thoughts grow stronger, helping silence the false narratives depression tries to repeat as fact. Thinking becomes clearer and kinder, helping your emotions follow a healthier path.
