Lesson Overview

16.2 Recognizing Flashbacks and Triggers: Flashbacks and triggers occur when your brain believes the past danger is happening again right now, sending shock waves through the body even when the environment is safe. You learn to identify what cues — sounds, smells, places, or emotions — activate this response so you can apply grounding strategies early. Recognizing a trigger gives you the chance to tell your brain, “This is a memory, not a threat.” You work on reclaiming control by staying anchored in the present moment while the body releases the tension that trauma once locked inside. Over time, triggers lose intensity as your nervous system learns that reminders are not dangers — they are echoes that you are strong enough to navigate.
