12.24 – What to Do When You Wake Up in a Panic or Freeze: Sudden panic at night can be disorienting, but regaining control begins with awareness. First, ground through your senses—feel the mattress, notice the air, name five things you can touch or see. Slow your breathing to a gentle rhythm, extending each exhale longer than the inhale. Avoid jumping up too fast; staying still while reorienting helps your nervous system recalibrate. If flashbacks occur, focus on safe sensations like holding a soft blanket or repeating grounding phrases. Keep a low light available to reduce confusion without shocking your eyes. Once your heartbeat steadies, sip water and avoid checking the clock. Returning to bed calmly rather than in fear rebuilds trust in nighttime safety. If panic episodes repeat, journaling triggers or seeking professional help provides clarity. Recovery means patience and preparation—reminding your body through repetition that night does not equal danger but opportunity for peaceful restoration.
