15.58 – What to Do If an Appliance Sparks or Makes Strange Noises: When appliances behave oddly—sparking, buzzing, or overheating—your first step is immediate disconnection. Unplug safely or turn off the breaker without touching exposed wires. Never pour water on electrical devices. Allow items to cool and avoid testing them again until inspected. Take note of any burning smell or smoke and ventilate the area. Keep fire extinguishers rated ABC within reach. Record model numbers for repair calls or warranty claims. Acting fast prevents escalation from a minor short to a dangerous fire. Replace frayed cords and avoid overloading outlets. Over time, consistent safety habits turn anxiety into awareness. Knowing what to do in those first 30 seconds can protect your entire home and reinforce that confident calm is the true foundation of household control and safety.
