6.3 – Reading a Prescription Label Correctly: Every prescription label is a set of instructions designed to keep you safe, but it’s easy to overlook details when you’re in a rush. Labels tell you how much to take, how often, and whether to eat before or after. They also warn about interactions with sunlight, alcohol, or other drugs. Learning to read them carefully prevents dangerous mix-ups that could send you to the hospital. Pay attention to dosage units—milligrams and milliliters are not the same—and confirm you’re following exactly what’s written. The pharmacy label also lists your name, refill number, and expiration date, which helps track timing. When you make it a habit to double-check labels before each dose, you reduce stress and increase independence. Reading carefully trains your brain to slow down and notice patterns, a skill that applies beyond medicine. Over time, your confidence grows as you master the fine print. Safety often depends on what you choose to notice.
