43.6 – Avoiding Distracted Walking or Phone Use: Avoiding distractions while walking keeps you safe from accidents and potential threats. Using phones, headphones, or other devices can pull your attention away from traffic, people, and surroundings. Many accidents happen because someone was focused on a screen instead of the environment. Keeping your head up and scanning regularly helps you notice hazards like uneven sidewalks, moving vehicles, or suspicious behavior. If you need to check your phone, step aside to a safe spot before doing so. Awareness also deters individuals who may target distracted people. Staying present keeps both your mind and body ready to react quickly if needed. Walking confidently and alertly communicates strength and control. Every moment of awareness strengthens your safety net in public spaces. Distraction-free walking is one of the simplest yet most powerful safety habits.
