10.10 – What to Do If You Feel Unsafe at Home: Feeling unsafe is a signal, not a weakness. Listening to that feeling early can prevent harm later. Start by identifying what triggers the fear—strange noises, conflict, poor lighting, or broken locks—and address what you can control first. Keep emergency numbers visible and a phone charged nearby at all times. Have a quick exit plan with essentials ready: keys, ID, medication, and cash. Contact trusted neighbors or friends who can check on you. If fear continues, reaching out to authorities or local resources is an act of self-respect, not overreaction. Staying silent only strengthens danger. Safety grows from clear plans and practiced responses, not panic. Writing down your safety steps reinforces control when anxiety rises. Remember, your comfort is your right; home should restore you, not threaten you. Protecting that right begins with action backed by preparation and calm awareness.
