13.61 – Communicating Calmly With Children During Conflict: Children mirror adult emotions quickly, so your calmness becomes their anchor. When tension arises, lower your voice instead of raising it. This signals safety and focus. Get down to their level physically and maintain soft eye contact to reduce fear. Use clear, simple sentences that guide rather than scold. Reassure them that emotions are okay but certain behaviors aren’t. Ask gentle questions to help them explain feelings instead of assuming. Offering choices—like two calm solutions—restores control and teaches problem-solving. Avoid sarcasm or threats, which damage trust. After resolving conflict, reinforce positive communication by praising honesty or calm effort. Consistency teaches children emotional regulation through example. Over time, they internalize your steady tone as a model for self-control. Communicating with patience during chaos builds lifelong respect, showing that strength expressed gently carries more power than anger ever could.
